Abstract

Headwaters from four of the main Iberian river basins (Guadalquivir, Guadiana, Júcar and Segura) are found in a small region, Campo de Montiel and Sierra de Alcaraz (southern Castilla-La Mancha, Spain), where the drainage networks are originated with numerous streams. The aim of the present work is to study the physical-chemical variability of these headwater streams in this area. Geographical visualization, field measurements and water analysis in laboratory have provided results indicating that orography, lithology and climate determine hydrologic regime of these fluvial systems, several of them being intermittent or ephemeral watercourses. Water scarcity and nitrate pollution caused by agricultural practices are current problems that could get worse with climate change projections, particularly in the Guadiana headwaters.
